Why AI Needs Human Values to Truly Succeed: A Perspective by Mo Jamous

The future of technology is AI — but the future of AI is human.

I’m Mo Jamous, a CIO focused on responsible innovation, and I believe one of the most overlooked aspects of AI is leadership. Not just technical leadership, but ethical and human-centered leadership.

šŸ¤– AI Must Be Grounded in Human Values

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming our world, from how we work and communicate to how we make decisions. But as AI systems become more sophisticated and autonomous, a critical question emerges: Can AI truly succeed without being deeply intertwined with human values? As Mo Jamous, I firmly believe the answer is a resounding no. For AI to reach its full potential and truly benefit humanity, it must be developed and deployed with a strong foundation in ethics, empathy, and a profound understanding of what it means to be human.

AI systems are only as good as the data and intentions behind them. Without transparency, governance, and accountability, we risk building systems that harm more than help.

That’s why I advocate for embedding those Core Human Value into AI:

  • AI transparency in decision-making
  • Fair and inclusive data practices
  • Cross-functional collaboration between engineers and ethicists

How to Embed Values into AI at the organizational level: Mo Jamous Approach

Embedding human values into AI isn’t a simple task; it requires a multi-faceted approach:

  • Integrated Development Teams: Development teams working on AI product solutions must be diverse, including engineers , product managers, designers, ethicists (risk, compliance, legal), and individuals from varied backgrounds. This helps identify and mitigate biases and ensures a broader perspective on the potential impact of AI during the development lifecycle in order to increase transparency and accountability.
  • Ethical AI Frameworks and Guidelines: Organizations and the whole industry need to continue to collaborate on developing robust ethical AI frameworks, regulations, and best practices that guide the design, development, and deployment of AI systems.
  • Organizational Education and Engagement: Fostering understanding and engagement with AI in any organization is crucial. Informed employees can contribute to the discussion about ethical AI and help drive a culture of accountability within the company.
  • Continuous Monitoring and Auditing: AI systems are not static. They must be continuously monitored, audited, and updated to ensure they continue to operate in a manner consistent with human values, especially as they interact with new data and scenarios. So even after going live into production, making sure that audit processes within companies are updated to include this level of continuous monitoring becomes paramount.

šŸ’” Leadership Is the Key Ingredient

Technology alone isn’t enough. Every algorithm, every deployment needs to be driven by leaders who ask:

Is this solving a real problem for real people?

In every major digital initiative I lead, that’s the question I start with. That’s what innovation is really for.

As Mo Jamous, I’m keen to hear your thoughts. What human value do you think is most critical for AI to succeed, and why?
